A Tragic Love

So I've been doing a ton of writing lately for a big story arc ingame. Thought I would post my most recent bit. The vague background for this is that Whitewind (my character, a night elf) believes that her husband (Virendis, a night elf) is dead. She was found fleeing for her life by a paladin of her guild (Varchild, a human) and he brought her to safety in Stormwind (city of humans). One thing led to another with the paladin, and she sought comfort in his arms. Of course, this brings about guilt after the fact:

Whitewind slipped from the warm blankets, careful not to disturb Varchild, and walked over to the windowsill. The guilt had woken her, shaking her like a rag doll to her very core. Silvery eyes roamed the city without seeing any of it as her mind wandered ages away. A simpler time, her life within the Temple so long ago; while the world was in chaos she was sheltered. Her books for company in the peaceful gardens, she waited. Those few friends she had managed to make left one by one, while she stayed behind. Not for lack of talent, her mentors gently encouraged her to seek out further training abroad. Some inner instinct she could not explain kept her in place. She waited.

Pressing her forehead to the cool glass as a sliver of moonlight shone down on the dip and swell of her exposed skin, Whitewind let the tears flow freely down her cheeks. It was so long ago, before Stormwind was even the hint of an idea, this dream of hers that became real. Had she strayed so far? The path before her had been shrouded for too long, she was afraid to look; afraid to see only one path before her with no more choices to be made.

Thick clouds obscured the moonlight, leaving her in darkness as a low rumble of thunder threatened rain. She waited. Had been waiting for so long she no longer remembered what for, until that blissful day that Virendis brushed his lips to hers. Looking up she pressed her palm to the glass, her wavering gaze searching the dark streets as if he would walk around the corner. Walk back into her life. Only the silvery glow of her eyes looked back to her in the glass, alone. The warmth of her hand left a fogged impression as she bowed her head, soft white hair caressing her shoulders with the movement. Instead, the first droplets of rain pattered against the glass, echoing her own as if the city cried with her. A choking sorrow suffocated her along with the guilt as she tried to make sense of her actions. Her children, their children, Magden would bring them to her and she had to see them safe. They may be all that she had left of him. Virendis, her only love. Another sob as her eyes squeezed tight shut, fearful of waking Varchild. Fate tugged at her heart, and she could not deny her feelings, no matter the brave front she showed to others. Each tear mourned the loss of her best friend, her confidant, her husband, her lover, her everything. He was gone, again.

Taking a few deep breaths she dragged her fingers down the glass to rest on the sill, her imprint fading in the darkness. Rain played a soft solo for her open wounds, easing the pain as only nature can. She drifted on waves in her mind’s eye, tossed about callously by an uncaring sea. He taught her to love the water, feel the freedom it brought and enjoy each moment for what it was, not what it could be.

What were those dreams now, if she lost the only love worth fighting for? The current carried her out to sea, and she was giving in. The thought of leaving behind her children tore her insides to shreds, but living any longer without Virendis left her barren and withered. She could only fight for so long without looking to the stars, knowing he looked down upon her and held out open arms, waiting. She could not let him wait. Torture enough that she did for so long before, neither of them deserved such fate once more.

Whitewind shivered with cold in the bedroom, wrapping her arms about her chest as she stared out into the night. She tried to remember the last time he held her, hugged her close and brought her comfort. She tried to remember his voice, his laugh that brought her such joy. She tried to remember, staring out that window as darkness turned to day. Only the hollow sound of her beating heart echoed in her ears, fading with the rain.
